Heating and Cooling Rebates

First Energy - HVAC Rebate Program

Right now, residential customers of Ohio Edison, The Illuminating Company and Toledo Edison, can save energy and money with rebates on heating and cooling solutions.

The savings start up front with rebates you can earn one of two ways:

  • Tune up* an existing HVAC system
  • Replace a less efficient system with the latest
    high-efficiency HVAC technology

The savings continue month after month with reduced energy usage and increased efficiency.

* Customer is eligible for one tune up rebate per unit every 5 calendar years.

Earn Rebates on Qualified Purchases and Services

Work with a participating contractor* to receive valuable rebates on ENERGY STAR® qualified HVAC solutions:

  • $25 on the tune up of an existing central air conditioner, heat pump or geothermal – bring your system back to peak operating efficiency to improve performance and energy savings
  • Up to $350 on the installation of a new high-efficiency central air conditioner or ductless system – reduce your cooling costs by as much as 30 percent**
  • Up to $400 on the purchase of an air-to-air or ductless heat pump – install an energy-efficient alternative to traditional furnaces and air conditioners to save energy all year long
  • $600 on the installation of an ENERGY STAR® qualified geothermal heat pump – take advantage of a renewable and efficient technology for heating, cooling and often, water heating

Federal Tax Credit - Geothermal & Solar Hot Water

Tax Credit:  30% of cost with no upper limit.
Geothermal heat pumps
  • There is no maximum credit for systems placed in service after 2008. The maximum credit is $2,000 for systems placed in service in 2008. 
  • Systems must be placed in service on or after January 1, 2008, and on or before December 31, 2016.
  • The geothermal heat pump must meet federal Energy Star criteria.
  • The home served by the system does not have to be the taxpayer’s principal residence.

 

Solar water-heating property

  • There is no maximum credit for systems placed in service after 2008. The maximum credit is $2,000 for systems placed in service before January 1, 2009. 
  • Systems must be placed in service on or after January 1, 2006, and on or before December 31, 2016.
  • Equipment must be certified for performance by the Solar Rating Certification Corporation (SRCC) or a comparable entity endorsed by the government of the state in which the property is installed. 
  • At least half the energy used to heat the dwelling's water must be from solar in order for the solar water-heating property expenditures to be eligible. 
  • The tax credit does not apply to solar water-heating property for swimming pools or hot tubs. 
  • The home served by the system does not have to be the taxpayer’s principal residence.

Step 1. The home energy assessment

We'll send a certified auditor to conduct a thorough assessment of your home's energy efficiency. Your assessment also includes FREE installation of several energy-efficient products such as:

  • High-efficiency showerheads
  • Kitchen and bathroom faucet aerators
  • Programmable thermostat OR carbon monoxide detector
  • Water heater pipe wrap

Step 2. Review the results and take action

Following the assessment, you’ll receive a customized report with recommendations on how to save energy and improve your home’s comfort. Recommendations may include:

  • Adding insulation
  • Eliminating drafts through air sealing
  • Upgrading heating equipment
  • Replacing windows and doors

Step 3. Make improvements and receive rebates

Before leaving your home, our auditor will provide you with a list of participating contractors and guide you through the Contractor-Installed and Do-It-Yourself measures and rebates available for each project.

Rebate Qualifications

  • Must complete a comprehensive home energy assessment by one of CLEAResult’s energy auditors (cost of assessment: $50)
  • Improvements must be recommended as a result of the home energy assessment.
  • Participating contractor must install Contractor-Installed measures. Customer can install Do-It-Yourself (DIY) installed measures.
  • Improvements must meet the Program’s minimum requirements for the measure.
  • The total combined rebate amount must be at least $75, but no more than the $1,250 maximum.
  • Rebate Application must be received by CLEAResult within one (1) year from the date of the home energy assessment and no greater than ninety (90) days from the date of completion of work.
